Radar Level Vs Ultrasonic Level measurement

Radar Level Transmitter

Vs Ultrasonic Level Transmitter

Here is a brief comparison of the ultrasonic level transmitter and radar level transmitter:

MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLE

Ultrasonic level transmitter working principle is based on Sound or acoustic Waves transit time,  while Radar level transmitter uses  High-Frequency Radar Impulses to measure the level of medium.

Vacuum Applications

Ultrasonic level measurement

required a medium that Sound must travel through a medium (usually air) because The absence of air molecules prevents the propagation of sound waves

while Radar level transmitter

Radar has no such issue of wave propagation and radar waves can travel through a vacuum.

Surface Condition Angles

Sound waves must be sent and received in a straight line  Reflective surfaces must be flat (i.e. Non-agitated and Non-turbulent condition), no angel issue in Radar level measurement.

Irregularities

In ultrasonic level sensor Foam and other debris collected on the surface of the liquid Effects the performance. Because foam absorbs the sound waves and impedes their return sound travel to the sensor. Radar level specially guided wave radar level sensor has no such problem due to foam formations.

Environmental Conditions

Ultrasonic devices should be mounted in a predictable environment Vapor, condensing humidity, and other contaminants that change the speed of sound through the air can affect the performance of ultrasonic level transmitter, Radar level transmitter have no such impact on environmental conditions.

CONTACT TYPE

Ultrasonic Level Transmitter is Non-Contact Measurement

while Radar level transmitters are both noncontact and Contact Measurement.

OPERATING LIMITS

Ultrasonic level measurement is Limited to Pressure and Temperature Limits because they are highly affected by pressure and temperature,

while Radar level measurement is usable in Extreme Temperature and Pressure conditions.  pressure and temperature Do Not Effect Device Performance.

MOUNTING

Radar and Ultrasonic level transmitters both are Top Mounted.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND APPLICATION CONDITIONS

Ultrasonic level measurement is Affected by environmental conditions, while Radar level  Measurement Performance is Not Affected by environmental conditions.

Temperature Limits

Ultrasonic units are typically plastic with a maximum temperature of 140˚F (60˚C)

Varying process temperatures may generate inaccurate readings

Pressure Limits

Ultrasonic devices are not intended for extreme pressure limits

Maximum working pressures should not exceed 30 PSIG (2 Bar)

COST

 Ultrasonic Level Transmitter is Cost-Effective

while Radar level transmitters are Moderately Priced as compared to the ultrasonic level transmitter.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Ultrasonic Level Transmitter overall performance is Acceptable while Radar level transmitter overall performance is Based On Strength of Reflection or Echo Received, so it is Exceptional. Performs Well Independent of Process Conditions.
